Erwin Jones Sr.

Position: Head Coach
  • Level 1 certified
  • All events specializing in hurdles
Erwin D. Jones is Head Coach of the Phoenix Bobcats Track & Field Club, a non-profit organization that has been a member of the national USA Track & Field governing body (www.USATF.org) since 1986. His 35-years of coaching experience include coaching with USATF clubs, track and field at public schools, youth of private and home school programs, as well as training individual clients.

Coach Jones has served as Youth Chairperson of USATF-AZ division, as well as in other capacities supporting USATF-AZ. At the national level, he has officiated at a number of USATF National Junior Olympic events. He is currently the Vice-President – USATF-AZ – Operations

In addition to the consistent effort he exerts in the training of his athletes, Coach Jones places paramount emphasis on the importance of academics; Club athletes have to maintain good grades to be eligible to compete. Over the years, Jones has been instrumental in providing advice and contact information to student athletes seeking scholarships to colleges and universities. Many of Coach Jones’ former athletes keep in contact to get advice, encouragement and just to let him know how/where they are in their lives!

Father of three active athletic former Bobcat boys, Jones volunteers time to their schools, their athletics events and keeps a close eye on their academic studies.

Assistant Coaches

Jim Lothrop

Position: Javelin
Coach Lothrop is one of the top youth javelin coaches in the U.S. He has coached the Bobcats for the past 10 years. In that time, he has coached 9 athletes to 21 All-American finishes, including nine National Champions.

Jim has two kids. His stepson, Jeremy, was the Arizona State 5A Discus Champion in 1999, and competed at the University of Arizona for two years. Jim is a computer programmer.

Dr. Mark Soderstrom

Position: Multi Events
Coach Soderstrom enters his third year with the Bobcats and is a former multi-event athlete, giving him the ability to teach all events. He works with our jumpers and vaulters, and still himself competes in the pole vault.

Marl's daughter Erika is also a member on the team. She placed third in the high school state meet in the 300m hurdles as a junior and qualified for an impressive five events at the state meet in 2014.

Dr. Soderstrom, a native Nevadan, is a 1993 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia. He is currently pursuing board certification by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Outside of veterinary medicine, he enjoys kayaking, biking, and camping with family.

Lance Levin

Position: Shot Put and Discus
Lance has enjoyed helping the team for the past three years. He competed in the throws in high school and college. He is married with two kids and daughter Simone is a member of team doing multi-events.

Robert Brooks

Position: Hurdles (guest coach)
Coach Brooks is in his third year as a guest coach. He brings great insight and motivation to the team, as a former All American hurdler at the Univ. of South Carolina and Super Bowl winner for the Green Bay Packers.

During his collegiate years Robert was considered one of the best track athletes in the world after winning the 110 meter high hurdles with a time of 13.9 seconds at the Keebler International Prep Track and Field Invitational in June 1988. He has had two boys on the Bobcats team, Robert and Elijah, who also compete in the hurdles.

Charles Okeke

Position: First Year Coach
Coach Okeke has two athletes on the team, including his youngest son Dominic who was 2014 USATF Junior Olympics Region 10 Champion in the turbo javelin.

Erwin Jones Jr.

Position: Sprints
Erwin holds 12 Bobcats records and was a two-time State Champion for Shadow Mountain High School in the 110m hurdles in Arizona. After finishing his college track career, he returns to teach the next generation.

Scott Haack

Position: Distance, Cross Country
Coach Haack has been with the Bobcats for four years. An avid runner, Scott has run in the Boston Marathon for the past three years. As a result of his commitment to the team, our distance program has renewed energy.

He is married and has 2 kids. His daughter Haley is a member of the team competing in sprints and hurdles.

Mike Markham

Position: Pole Vault
Coach Markham is entering his third year with the Bobcats, and has added another dimension to the team that it has never had before: pole vault. Last year the Bobcat’s had four pole vault athletes, a club first!

Jason Shaver

Position: Javelin, Shot Put and Discus
Coach Shaver was a member of the team as a teenager and has returned seventeen years later with his two sons on the team. He serves as our throws coach, and assists with javelin.

Jason’s son Ryan was runner-up at the national meet last year in the javelin.

Mike Gregoire

Position: Sprints and New Athletes (guest coach)
Two of Coach Gregoire's daughters were members of the Bobcats. He is great with new and younger athletes. He has lived in the Deer Valley Unified School District for 13 years and is on the Deer Valley governing board.

Mike and his wife have four children, two of which are current attendees of Deer Valley schools and two who are in college. He is an internet entrepreneur specializing in online database development and leading-edge computer technology. He has owned and operated the software company, FanStar Sports, for the last 23 years.

Chuck LeVinus

Position: First Year Coach
Coach LeVinus is in his first year with the Bobcats. His son Charlie placed 9th in the shot put at the 2014 USATF Junior Olympic Nationals in Houston.

Lisa Samuels Kahn

Position: Distance
Lisa is a former distance runner at Cortez High school and has competed in marathons around The Valley. She also coaches at Centennial Middle School in Kyrene School District where she has been a teacher for the last 28 years.
